Who owns Frogmore Cottage?

Frogmore Cottage is said to be the likely next home for Prince Andrew, who may be forced to leave Royal Lodge following public outrage over his rent-free agreement.

It is ultimately owned by the Crown Estate, but is used as a private royal residence and is not open to the public. Ownership of Frogmore Cottage passes from monarch to monarch.

In 2019, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved to Frogmore Cottage and used it as their official home base while in the United Kingdom. It was gifted to them by the late Queen Elizabeth after they got married in 2018.

Harry’s spokesman said in 2020 that the payment fully covered the necessary renovation costs of Frogmore Cottage, which remains “the UK residence of the Duke and his family”.

The couple last spent time at the country house in 2022 when they came to the UK to attend the Queen’s platinum anniversary celebrations. They also hosted their daughter Lilibet’s first birthday there.

Who previously lived at Frogmore Cottage?

Frogmore Cottage was first used as a retreat by Queen Charlotte and her unmarried daughters. Later, American theologian Henry James Sr. and his family rented the property in the mid-1840s.

In 1897, Abdul Karim, Queen Victoria’s private secretary, moved into the house with his wife and father.

It was also the refuge of Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna, who stayed there in the 1920s while in exile from Russia after the Russian Revolution.

Frogmore Cottage was subdivided into five separate housing units in the early 21st century and was occupied by Windsor estate workers.

In 2019, Harry and Meghan renovated it before the birth of their first child, Archie. But the house has been largely empty since senior members of the royal family left and moved to Montecito in 2020.

However, Harry’s cousin Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank reportedly moved into the property in 2021 after giving birth to their first child.

This appeared to be a temporary arrangement as they moved out just a few weeks later, according to reports.
