Texas newlyweds stranded in Jamaica as Category 5 Hurricane Melissa hits

What started off as a dream honeymoon turned into a terrifying ordeal for Texas newlyweds Kasydee and Hunter Bishop, who were stranded in Jamaica as Category 5 storm Hurricane Melissa barreled toward the island. Fox 4 Dallas-Fort Worth.
Melissa is predicted to be the strongest hurricane in Jamaica’s history, with sustained winds of 175 mph. Authorities are warning of life-threatening flash floods, landslides and widespread damage to nearby areas. Residents and visitors are asked to take immediate precautions as the storm approaches.
The Bishops, who remained in Montego Bay on the island’s northwest coast, arrived just before evacuation orders were issued, Fox 4 reported. The station added that the airport has since been closed and all outbound flights have been cancelled, leaving many tourists stranded as the hurricane progresses.
“All we’ve heard is how severe the storm is going to be and right now we really have no idea what to expect,” Hunter said, according to the local station.

Kasydee added that she prayed that the hurricane would not disrupt the airport and prevent them from returning home. But as the storm moved across the country, the couple moved into a shelter.
“At least we feel pretty safe here!!” In a post on TikTok on Monday, he added that he felt very lucky to have a place to stay. “I pray constantly for her protection and everyone here!!!”

As Melissa moves northeast, Cuba and surrounding countries are bracing for heavy rain, flooding, storms and damaging winds. Severe weather conditions are also expected in areas outside the direct path of the storm.

The last time Jamaica faced a hurricane of similar magnitude was Hurricane Gilbert in 1988; this was the deadliest and most destructive Category 4 storm in the nation’s history. The storm left hundreds of people homeless and forced thousands into overcrowded emergency shelters, according to a report from the National Library of Jamaica. Despite its ferocity, the official death toll remained relatively low at 45 deaths and very few injuries, but the storm caused an estimated $800 million in damage across the island, the publication said.
