Centre To Build 5.4 Km Tunnel To Ease Adi Kailash Route

– Dehradun: The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will construct a 5.4 km tunnel to bypass the danger zone on the route to Adi Kailash and Kailash Mansarovar near the Indo-China border between Dharchula and Gunji. The tunnel will shorten the travel distance of pilgrims and tourists by approximately 22 kilometers.

Sharing the information on Friday, Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta said that the decision was taken as the existing road near Chiyalekh on the Adi Kailash route to Gunji has become dangerous and unsafe for passengers.

“The road between Bundi and Gunji near Chiyalekh is dangerous as the hills on it are weak and unstable,” Tamta said. “A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared for the construction of the 5.4 km tunnel. Work will begin after the DPR is completed and approved by the Centre.”

He added that the road in front of Gunji has now been extended to the Chinese border. “The road built in this difficult mountainous terrain near Chiyalekh and leading to the pilgrimage centers of Kailash Mansarovar and Adi Kailash is unsafe for heavy vehicles. This led to the decision to build a tunnel up to Gunji,” the minister said.

Tamta said the tunnel will eliminate the risks of traveling on the existing route and will also shorten the Dharchula-Gunji journey by about 22 km.
