Guess we will silence them: Wolvaardt channels Cummins before India vs South Africa Women WC 2025 final

South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt has expressed her desire to recreate the atmosphere of the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup final by silencing the home fans when her team takes on India in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.

Echoes of Pat Cummins’ 2023 declaration

Wolvaardt was inspired by Australian captain Pat Cummins, who said there was “nothing more satisfying than hearing the silence of a huge crowd” before leading his team to victory against India in the 2023 final in Ahmedabad.

At the pre-match press conference, Wolvaardt acknowledged the challenge of playing in front of a passionate crowd that is expected to fill the stands in Navi Mumbai, saying “I hope we win. I think that will silence them. Yeah.”

The South African skipper expects the final to be a high-scoring affair, similar to the semi-final between India and Australia, where both teams combined for 679 runs. Staying calm under pressure is crucial, Wolvaardt said. “It could be quite a high point, so I think it’ll be really important if we can stay really calm. Tomorrow it might look like there’s a lot going on with the borders and the crowds and the noise, but I think we just need to stay as solid as possible and focus as much as possible on that moment and what we need to do,” he said.

South Africa’s comeback after poor start

South Africa began their campaign with a heavy defeat, falling short for just 69 runs in 20.4 overs against England. But they rebounded strongly to reach their first Women’s World Cup final. Wolvaardt broke the record by leading from the front in the semi-final against England, scoring 169 off 143 balls. Marizanne Kapp completed the effort with a five-wicket haul (5/20) to seal a 125-run victory and guide South Africa into title contention.
