Satya Nadella says Microsoft will increase headcount following major layoffs, but there is a rider

Following major layoffs, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the tech giant plans to expand its workforce; However, after the artificial intelligence revolution, the focus will now be on a more strategic and stronger approach.
Nadella told investor Brad Gerstner on the B2G podcast that the company’s headcount will grow again, but in a “smarter, stronger” way.
“We will increase the number of our employees,” Nadella said. “But from my perspective, this headcount will grow with much more power than we had before AI.”
Microsoft layoffs
Nadella’s comments follow a report that the tech company is cutting nearly 4,000 software engineering positions due to the growing adoption of artificial intelligence, according to a Bloomberg report. Microsoft plans to cut nearly 6,000 jobs across its divisions, with more than 30% of the layoffs centered in Washington.
In May this year, Satya Nadella addressed the company for the first time after announcing layoffs of nearly 6,000 employees, accounting for about three percent of the global workforce. He emphasized that this decision was part of a wider internal restructuring and did not indicate any problems with employee performance, Mint It was previously reported.
At a company-wide town hall meeting, Nadella addressed staff and explained that the layoffs were necessary to realign teams in line with Microsoft’s changing priorities, particularly its increasing emphasis on artificial intelligence. He acknowledged the emotional impact of the decision but emphasized that it was motivated by strategic changes rather than issues with productivity or talent.
Microsoft, in particular, is not the only company that has made layoffs recently. E-commerce giant Amazon had previously confirmed plans to lay off nearly 14,000 corporate employees, just months after Chief Executive Andy Jassy warned that artificial intelligence would reduce the company’s workforce. According to Reuters, the company plans to lay off 30,000 people in total. TCS, Accenture, Microsoft, Salesforce and Google are among the IT and technology companies that have restructured.
IT and technology companies around the world are experiencing significant changes due to pressures from US operations and recent concerns about US President Donald Trump’s proposed increase in H-1B visa fees; this increase may impact new applicants aiming to work in the United States.
Aside from concerns about US visa fee increases, jobs in the sector are reportedly at risk of being replaced by artificial intelligence, which some companies may choose to use to increase efficiency and productivity rather than relying on human workforces.
