Josh Giddey matches Michael Jordan’s record at Chicago Bulls, Dyson Daniels also in hot form
Giddey’s improved three-point shooting and stronger frame are noteworthy, but most importantly, he is helping the Bulls win games, which sheds light on his individual form.
“They’re both great young men who represent Australia in a way that I’m very proud of,” Longley said at the launch of Amazon Prime’s NBA broadcast in October. Amazon Prime will stream 67 games per season as part of a new 11-year global deal.
“They play the right way. They play for their teammates, they play defense, they’re unselfish. They play hard and they hit hard. I think they’re both well designed to compete.”
Although there has been speculation about whether the Australian couple can handle the attention that comes with their lucrative contracts, Jordan Longley, who won three NBA championships with the Bulls, said the pressure won’t be a problem.

“Do you think salary will make a big difference to the pressure you feel on the field?” Longley asked.
“Because I’ve never felt that. I feel like the pressure comes from not letting your teammates down, trying to win games and trying to get into the play-offs.
“Maybe I’m naive, but I feel like the pay package happens and then you close the door and try to be a good basketball player.
“Both guys are on teams trying to prove themselves and get into the championship window, so they’ll be fully committed to that. I’m hoping making a little more money won’t change that.”
Proctor and Furphy are ready for more
This season we may also see a few Australian players move up to regular minutes; these include Cleveland rookie Tyrese Proctor and Indiana’s Johnny Furphy after impressive performances in the preseason.

“I’m really excited because Tyrese faded away for a while there, but he’s obviously found his game again,” Longley said.
“People saw his value and he has a team that knows how to win. This is a great opportunity and he seems like the kind of young man who will take it.”
Furphy had some strong dunks in the preseason and was able to elevate Paces’ rotation.

Furphy is a late-blooming Melbourne-raised player, so he’s not well-known locally.
“I honestly haven’t seen much of him,” Longley admitted.
“Someone showed me one of his dunks. I didn’t know that was in his pass. But I know the coaches around him loved him, loved him working hard.

Ben Simmons and Patty Mills remain free agents. Although there is no indication either of them will play this season, Longley has not given up hope.
“I’d be surprised if he doesn’t take another look at Ben,” Longley said. “Maybe he is waiting for the right opportunity for a team on the way to the championship, but I don’t have detailed information about it.
“Same with Patty. If I were her, I’d wait until midseason to see who needs an experienced shooter and a championship contender.”
Big futures for Toohey, Rocco and the Boomers
Longley knows rookie Alex Toohey well from their time together at the Sydney Kings. However, Toohey is currently in Golden State, learning from NBA legends Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
“I talked to Alex and he’s having fun,” Longley said.
“The Golden State has such a deep culture, and my friend Steve [Kerr] as a coach. She absolutely loves it. It’s exciting for a young man to be involved in this.
“There’s also the other side of Rocco Zikarsky, where he’s trying to find his first window of deep competitiveness in a franchise and has great stars around him. I like the landing spots for both.”
Players like Furphy and Daniels bring an athleticism to the Boomers that the team has rarely had before, but Longley feigned insult at suggestions that there are no athletic players like Andrew Gaze or himself.

Giddey, Daniels and up-and-comers can form a strong core for the 2027 FIBA World Cup and hopefully Los Angeles 2028.
“Boomers have a lot of weapons at their disposal,” Longley said. “This generation is a little bit like the generation that was passed down to me from Andrew Gaze. They’re pretty similar in age and they’re playing together in the NBA at the same time.
