As the cost of the weekly food shop continues to rise, shoppers are more keen than ever to make sure they’re getting the best value for their money.

To help households decide where to buy essentials, consumer group Which? It continues its ongoing analysis of the UK’s cheapest supermarkets, revealing the best value retailers each month.

New figures show just how tight the race is for budget retailers who continue to offer UK shoppers the best value for money.

While the two supermarkets were fighting for the top spot, competition was also intensifying among other rivals. Tesco, which has long been at the top of the 70-item basket, has now moved ahead of Asda, even when using its popular Clubcard.

At Tesco, the longer list of items with Clubcard costs £133.38 (and £134.89 without), an increase of 69p compared to Asda’s £132.69.

This was followed by Morrisons (£135.41), Sainsbury’s (£136.79 with Nectar card) and Ocado (£151.57).

Waitrose was the most expensive on average, with the larger store costing £541.55, an increase of £72.44 compared to Asda.

Asda is also ahead of Tesco in terms of a fuller basket of 187 items. This listing at Asda costs £469.11, £7 cheaper than Tesco (£476.11) with Clubcard.

Aldi and Lidl were not included in the wider comparison because they have a smaller range of products compared to other supermarkets. Which one? explains.

Reena Sewraz, Which One? Retail Editor said: “In our latest price analysis, Lidl has taken the top spot as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for the second time in just a few months, showing it can beat Aldi even for those not signed up to the discount scheme.

“The long list of groceries shows that Asda remains one of the UK’s cheapest supermarkets and is a good option for those looking to choose from a wider selection of branded goods.

“High food prices are still a growing concern for many households, especially as we approach Christmas, but our analysis shows that shopping around pays off – simply choosing one supermarket over another could save you 26 per cent.”
