A federal judge on Thursday ordered the Trump administration to pay full November SNAP benefits by Friday, rejecting the administration’s plan to partially fund the food stamp program for 42 million Americans.
“People have been deprived for too long,” Judge Jack McConnell said in handing down the decision during a hearing in U.S. District Court in Rhode Island.
The decision came after plaintiffs in the case urged him to reject the administration’s proposed plan for partial benefits.
The Trump administration announced last week that it would not use a $4.65 billion emergency fund authorized by Congress. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Like other federal programs, the program had no available funding because Congress did not approve a temporary funding bill that would reopen the U.S. government.
