NCAA probe names college basketball players linked to betting-related violations

Last month, the NBA was rocked by a widespread betting investigation. Dozens of people with ties to the league, including the current coach, were arrested on October 23.

At the time, the investigation was not believed to involve college basketball players. But federal investigators and NCAA officials, led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, later confirmed that an investigation had been opened to examine possible gambling violations at the Division I level of college basketball.

on friday, NCAA’s violations committee announced “It revealed violations by six student-athletes competing in men’s basketball at New Orleans, the Mississippi Valley and Arizona State.”

The cases at the three schools are being considered separately, but each share similarities, such as allegations of betting intended to manipulate games or student-athletes providing improper information to known bettors.

“Additionally, all three cases involved the lack of cooperation of student-athletes who knowingly provided false or misleading information to investigators. As a result of the sports betting violations, all of the student-athletes violated the code of ethical conduct, which triggered permanent impropriety,” the NCAA said. he said.

The NCAA named the following six: Cedquavation Hunter, Dyquavian Short, Jamond Vincent, Donovan Sanders, Alvin Stredic and Chatton “BJ” Freeman. As of this year, none of these athletes are enrolled at their previous schools.

The NCAA determined that Sanders and Stredic received monetary offers to host a powerhouse game against Alabama A&M in January. The NCAA said Sanders was heard talking about “throwing games” before the game against Tulsa in December 2024.

The governing body of college athletics in the US said Hunter and Sanders had refused to cooperate in their respective cases. Meanwhile, Stredic, Vincent and Short did not respond to enforcement staff during the processing of their respective cases. Freeman agreed to cooperate on a resolution, according to officials.

The organization’s infractions committee “did not consider penalties for student-athletes who violated NCAA rules but confirmed the findings by confirming that the violations occurred,” officials said.
