Driver killed in crash on I-5 North
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSİ) — The Sorrento Valley Road ramp north of I-5 was closed to traffic Friday morning due to a fatal crash, according to a report from CHP and Caltrans.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) says a 65-year-old man was driving a silver Hyundai Sonata and sped onto the freeway from the Genesee Boulevard off-ramp just after 10 a.m. Friday morning.
According to the CHP, for reasons still under investigation, the car crossed all lanes of the 5 Freeway and hit the center divider wall, then reversed across the lanes and hit a freeway sign before crashing into the guardrail start at the Sorrento Valley Road on-ramp.
SkyFOX/KUSI in the Sky was overhead around 11 a.m., where police could be seen blocking all off-ramp lanes of Sorrento Valley Road from the 5th freeway next to the car with heavy front end damage.

The car stopped after hitting the beginning of the guardrail and was still sitting there at 11.30am while police tried to investigate.
Paramedics arriving at the scene had to perform life-saving measures on the victim, including CPR. CHP reported that the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of the family by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Caltrans reports Sorrento Valley Road off-ramp lanes north of I-5 were closed to traffic at 11 a.m. Traffic on I-5 is backed up to Genesee Boulevard; but traffic could still be seen moving slowly.
Caltrans said in an update: All lanes were fully opened to traffic at 13.09.
Some passing drivers were reporting to CHP that there was still a lot of debris in the lanes and were swerving to avoid it.
The CHP said a toxicology report through the San Diego County Medical Examiner is pending to determine whether alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in the crash.
