Moment enormous wave crashes down on people in Tenerife as wild weather kills three and injures 15

This is the terrifying moment a huge wave crashes into spectators: One person died and nine were injured as a tidal wave hit Tenerife.

A huge wave crashed into a pier in the popular northern resort of Puerto de la Cruz on Saturday as high winds and bad weather battered the Spanish island.

Six French holidaymakers who suffered the same fate were injured in a separate incident at Roque de las Bodegas on Tenerife’s north-east coast.

In total, 15 people were injured and three people died as a result of the dangerous weather conditions that hit the island this weekend.

Among the dead were a 79-year-old Dutch woman and a 43-year-old local man.

Overnight, the body of an unidentified man was found in the sea off the beach called El Cabezo in Granadilla, in the southwest of the island.

The Foreign Office said it had received no reports of any British nationals being injured or killed in the tidal wave off Tenerife yesterday.

The incident with the highest number of casualties, in which an elderly Dutch tourist tragically lost his life, occurred yesterday at 15:00, when people were dragged into the sea from the platform they were standing on due to a large tidal wave.

The incident that caused the highest loss of life, in which a 79-year-old Dutch woman lost her life, occurred around 15:00 yesterday.

The emergency response coordination team, led by the regional government, said at the time: ‘One woman died and nine others were injured after being swept out to sea by the wave.

‘Local police and others at the scene rescued the victims from the water.

‘Police confirmed one of them had suffered a heart attack and attempted to resuscitate him.

‘Paramedics continued resuscitation efforts when they were unsuccessful and the woman was confirmed dead at the scene.

‘Three of the nine injured were in a serious condition when taken to hospital.’

A spokesperson for the center said they suffered a variety of injuries, including hip and leg injuries. The injured were taken to various hospitals on the island.

The incident in Charco del Viento, in which a 43-year-old man lost his life, occurred just before 16.45.

Local reports said he was identified as a local living in nearby La Orotava and was fishing when he was swept out to sea.

Emergency response teams said: ‘The alarm received said the man had fallen overboard and needed assistance.

‘A helicopter rescued him and took him to the helicopter landing pad at the docks in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

‘On arrival he was confirmed dead due to the severity of his injuries.

‘An investigation by the Civil Guard is ongoing.’

The first incident, which occurred around 11.30 on Saturday and reportedly injured many French tourists, is said to have occurred as a result of ignoring the warning signs and getting too close to the sea.

Emergency responders confirmed that none of the French tourists suffered life-threatening injuries. There are 3 men and 3 women among the injured.

They got caught in the water and managed to get out of the sea with the help of others. Five were taken to hospital, including one by air ambulance.

The nationality of the man who is said to have suffered a heart attack when he was pulled from the sea at El Cabezo beach in Granadilla at around 14:00 on Saturday was not disclosed.

Local authorities said he was pulled from the sea ‘after being found floating in the water’ and they have not yet said whether he fell into the ocean in the same conditions as those swept off their feet by large waves.

On the day of the three deaths, Canary Islands authorities reminded local people and holidaymakers that they should ‘exert maximum caution on the coast’.

‘Do not stand at the ends of piers or breakwaters, do not risk taking photos or videos near where the waves break,’ they said.

The warning about sea conditions was first issued on Friday, when authorities warned people of the impending tidal surge and strong winds and advised people to avoid coastal roads and put themselves at risk by taking photos and videos of rough seas.

Officials say the Canary Islands remain alert to coastal dangers.

Between January and October, 54 people drowned in the Canary Islands.
