Two people died and eight people were in critical but stable condition in hospital, officials said.
There is no suspect detained yet regarding the conflict.
Brown University released a statement confirming “multiple shooting victims.”
It was stated that “We cannot share their condition” and “they were transferred to local hospitals”.
The university said multiple exams will be held in the Barus & Holley Engineering building in the afternoon.
John Goncalves, a member of the Providence Council whose ward includes the Brown campus, said: “We’re still getting information about what’s going on, but we’re just telling people to lock their doors and stay alert.
“As a Brown alumnus who loves the Brown community and represents this district, I am heartbroken. My heart goes out to all the family members and people affected.”

A police official speaking to The Associated Press said that at least two people were killed and many others were injured in the attack.
The incident is believed to have occurred near an engineering building on campus, according to the school’s alarm system.
Kristy DosReis, public information officer for public safety for the city of Providence, declined to provide details on the number of people injured or killed.
“Multiple people were shot,” DosReis said.
“An active investigation is ongoing and we urge people to shelter in place.”
At 16:22 local time (21:22 GMT) Brown University sent out an urgent alert warning of an active shooter on campus and urging people to “lock doors, silence phones, and remain anonymous until further notice.”
It was also stated that people should flee, evacuate safely if possible, hide or, as a last resort, “fight.”

Trump retracts statement about detained suspect
Donald Trump initially said a suspect was in custody but later retracted that.
He shared on Truth Social that “the FBI is on scene” regarding the Brown University shooting. “I received information about the shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island. The suspect is in custody. God bless the victims and their families!”
But minutes later he wrote: “Brown University Police have reversed their previous statement; Suspect is NOT in custody.”
