Influencer starts illegal fire, flies drone over campers on K’gari

An influencer has been fined for setting illegal fires in K’gari.

The Australian woman was caught after uploading a video of the action that took place on the island, about 250 kilometers north of Brisbane, about four weeks ago.

He was fined $834 by Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service rangers.

“Our compliance officers use different methods to uncover these crimes,” a QPWS spokesperson said. “For operational reasons, I cannot provide further details on compliance activities.”

The woman also received a warning for using a drone to record video over a camping area where drone use is restricted.

Fires are prohibited on the island unless lit in fire rings provided at Dundubara and Waddy Point campsites.

Senior ranger Chad Hoult said content creators are not exempt from the rules and are not official sources of information when it comes to K’gari regulations.

“Ignoring these rules poses a serious threat to K’gari’s sensitive environment, unique wildlife and rich cultural heritage,” Hoult said.
