Bihar Elections 2025 Maithili Thakur Constituency, Votes: Folk singer-turned-BJP newcomer surges ahead in Alinagar

Cultural icon steps into politics
Thakur, who has received critical acclaim for his classical compositions as well as his interpretations of Maithili and Bhojpuri folk music, represents a rare transition from the stage to the campaign journey.
In a field dominated by seasoned political figures, he is currently ahead of RJD heavyweight Binod Mishra; This is a surprising development in the state’s political history.
Speaking to ANI on Friday, Thakur expressed both his excitement and responsibility in continuing his leadership. “This is like a dream. People have expectations from me… This will be my first term as MLA and I will do my best for my constituents… I will serve my people like their daughter… Right now I can only see Alinagar and how I can make them work…” he said.
Young, popular and awaiting his first political victory
If current trends continue, Thakur could become Bihar’s youngest MLA. He turned 25 in July and is part of a growing group of young candidates the BJP is fielding this election season. His entry into politics followed a rapid increase in his public visibility. Thakur first rose to national fame in 2017 after joining Rising Star India. He has since amassed a large digital following, particularly on YouTube, where he has attracted millions of listeners with his folkloric and devotional interpretations. Born in Benipatti in Madhubani district, Thakur was trained in classical and folk music from his father and grandfather, both musicians.
His family later moved to Dwarka in New Delhi to support his music education and career, which was growing steadily through performances, tours and online broadcasts.
During the campaign, Thakur combined musical support with sharp constituency-specific promises; this includes his widely discussed promise to rename Alinagar as Sitanagar if elected. He reiterated his commitment Friday morning.
