Local body polls and Rythu Bharosa to be on the agenda of Cabinet meeting today

The Telangana Cabinet, headed by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, will meet on Monday, November 17, to address many critical issues and the long-awaited local body elections will be at the top of the agenda.
With the Supreme Court giving the government a strict deadline of November 24 to announce its election programme, the Cabinet is expected to deliberate extensively on the conduct of the elections. The nearly two-year delay in local elections stems from legal troubles regarding B.C.’s 42% reserve, which the government is keen on.
GO 9, which provided 42% reservation for Backward Classes in local institutions, was recently stayed by the Supreme Court. The court ordered the elections to be held by early reservation method. The state government then approached the Supreme Court, which dismissed the petition.

In the backdrop of this, the authorities were instructed to submit a comprehensive report and the Legal Department presented its findings after detailed consultations. The upcoming Cabinet meeting is expected to take a final decision based on this report. This was further hinted at by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy following the general election results in Jubilee Hills.
It will be interesting to see whether the government will go ahead with the elections, especially in a climate where BC associations are demanding that the elections be held only after 42% reservations are legally cleared.
Another important topic on the agenda will be the payment of Rythu Bharosa support to farmers, which the government is willing to announce ahead of the Rabi season.
As the draft Bill is ready, the Gig Workers Welfare Bill is also likely to be tabled and discussed. The bill aims to provide social security and corporate support to gig and platform-based workers in Telangana.
