Snow forecast MAPPED as blizzards to hit 80 locations across the UK | Weather | News

Heavy snow is expected to fall in many parts of Britain this week as temperatures drop due to severe weather in the Arctic.

Widespread cold conditions and some winter hazards are expected across the country. The UK Health Safety Agency has issued a cold weather warning, effective from today (Monday) and remaining in force until Friday. It covers the East Midlands, West Midlands, North East, North West and Yorkshire and the Humber.

The Met Office has confirmed that snow and ice are possible after a period of above average temperatures; High pressure is expected to lead to widespread cold conditions across the UK.

It is stated that the most important factor causing the weather to cool is the change in wind direction.

England recorded its coldest night since March when temperatures dropped to minus 7C at Tulloch Bridge in the Highlands on Saturday.

“High pressure to the north-west will cause a cold northern flow from the Arctic towards the UK this week,” Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Holley said.

He added: “This will bring much colder weather conditions than recent days and although it will be drier overall than recent days there will also be a risk of winter hazards such as snow and ice.

“There will be widespread frost events across England, temperatures will drop to -7C in places, and daytime temperatures will remain in single digits across the country. When a strong wind from the north is added to this, the wind will cool down significantly.”

Snow could fall in parts of Scotland and the North East on Monday, according to forecast website OpenWeather.

Then, heavy snowfall is expected to occur in some parts of England from Tuesday. Snow is expected in many places in the north, from Orkney off the coast of Scotland to Bodmin in Devon.

With the onset of winter conditions, RAC warned drivers to be more careful on the roads.

RAC Breakdown spokeswoman Alice Simpson said: “Freezing temperatures have the potential to make roads hit by heavy rain very slippery and potentially icy.

“We expect transport volumes to be around 10% higher than normal for this time of year, meaning around 1,000 more people need our help every day.

“Normal fall indicators, such as leaves falling on the roads, can also become very dangerous in icy conditions as they create an extra layer between the tires and the road surface, increasing the likelihood of skidding.”
