Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia announced Friday night that she will resign her seat in the House and that her last day in office will be Jan. 5.
Greene’s announcement was made in a video and Statement published on XIt comes after a dramatic split with President Donald Trump, who she said played a role in her decision to leave Congress in the middle of his third term in Congress.
While Green, 51, is a leading supporter of Trump and a leading figure in the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, he has courted controversy for promoting conspiracy theories and using excessive rhetoric.
But he recently faced criticism from Trump for supporting a bill that would force the Justice Department to release investigative files on notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Greene also criticized the Republican president for prioritizing meetings with foreign leaders at the expense of paying attention to the needs of Americans.
“I have so much self-respect and dignity, I love my family so much, and I don’t want my sweet county to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we fought for, only to fight and win my election, while the Republicans will likely lose the midterm elections,” Greene wrote in her statement.
“And in turn, you are expected to defend the President from impeachment after he poured tens of millions of dollars into me with hate and tried to destroy me,” Greene said.
“The whole thing is so ridiculous and completely frivolous,” he wrote. “I refuse to be a ‘battered wife’ hoping that everything will be over and healed.”
Greene’s resignation could pave the way for her to replace Trump in the White House in the 2028 elections.
