Rain and blustery winds hit UK this weekend after cold snap ends

A week of snow and winter threat will give way to heavy rain this weekend as the cold spell comes to an end across much of the UK.

The Met Office expects a transition to milder but more unstable weather conditions, with rain and stronger winds likely to occur in some areas.

Temperatures will still remain on the cooler side, but the weather agency predicts temperatures will gradually return to levels more typical for this time of year.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Snow is not forecast for next weekend. As low pressure arrives from the Atlantic, the weather will become less cold and more unstable with periods of rain and strong winds.

“As a result, temperatures will approach the average of the year. However, frost events will be possible on nights when the sky remains clear.”

The move to milder weather follows a week of widespread weather warnings issued across the UK. Yellow cold health warnings in the North East, North West, Yorkshire and the Humber are expected to be lifted on Saturday morning.

A yellow cold health alert is issued when significant impacts on health and social care services are possible, including an increase in deaths among older people with health conditions, increased demand for healthcare services and impacts on the workforce that may affect the delivery of services.

Yellow cold health warnings have been in place for the East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London, South East and South West since Monday and will be lifted on Saturday morning.

On Thursday night the UK experienced its coldest night of autumn so far, with temperatures dropping to -11.7C at Loch Glascarnoch.
