Trump calls Marjorie Taylor Greene resignation ‘great news for the country’ | Republicans

Republican Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has suffered a dramatic blowout with Donald Trump despite being a longtime ally, announced Friday that she would resign, and the president called it “great news.”

“Loyalty should be a two-way street,” Greene said in a lengthy resignation statement shared on social media, adding that it was “unfair and wrong” for Trump to attack her for disagreeing with him.

Trump, who announced last week that he was withdrawing his support for Greene, appeared to be celebrating Greene’s resignation. “I think this is great news for the country. It’s great,” he told an ABC News reporter.

Asked if Greene had briefed him, Trump said: “No, it doesn’t matter, but I think it’s great. I think she should be happy.”

Greene said last week that she was subjected to “a series of threats” after Trump withdrew his support and endorsement.

Greene reiterated these threats in her statement, saying she faced “endless personal attacks, death threats, legal sanctions, ridiculous slander and lies about me that most people wouldn’t last a day.”

Texas congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, Democrat sent on social media: “I’ll be honest… I didn’t see this coming, but the threats that come with being on the opposite side of Trump are REAL!”

This move sent shockwaves through US politics. Republican political strategist Shermichael Singleton called it “a huge shocker.”

Singleton: “Maybe he’s looking at future plans.” said CNN.

Greene may be an ally of Democratic congressman Ro Khanna, who worked with her to pass a bill to release files on Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes.

“MTG is likely to be a formidable candidate for 2028,” Khanna said said NBC News. “His stances on Epstein, regulation of AI, and anti-war are more in touch with MAGA voters than J.D. Vance.”

Some observers couldn’t help but point out the strange turn of events: Trump’s resignation, a onetime Trump ally, just hours after an Oval Office meeting in which Trump praised Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old democratic socialist mayor of New York City whom Trump called “100% Communist Crazy.”

“Trump took such a harsh shine to Mamdani that Marjorie Taylor Greene resigned from Congress,” said Malcolm Kenyatta, vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee. wrote In X.

Georgia Democrat Shawn Harris, who is running for Congress in Greene’s heavily Republican district, tried to rally supporters in response to the announcement.

“As you have probably heard, Marjorie Taylor Greene has announced her resignation, effective January 5, 2026,” Harris said. to mail on social media on Friday. “Get ready, Georgia! Teachers, farmers, veterans, EVERYONE, I need your support.”

“His break with Trump has made him an even bigger national sensation,” Georgia’s largest newspaper, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reported on his resignation.
