Teachers fended off a grizzly bear that attacked a school group walking along a trail in British Columbia, Canada, on Thursday, authorities said.

“The group had stopped on a trail near the community when a grizzly bear emerged from the woods and attacked,” the investigator said. Kevin Van Damme of the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service said in an update on social media. “Teachers successfully removed the bear using pepper spray and bear basher.”

According to CBC News, 11 people were injured in the attack, including fourth and fifth grade students.

British Columbia Health Services said two people were in critical condition, two were in serious condition and seven others were treated at the scene.
