Davis Cup Finals: Italy beat Spain to win historic third successive title

Both Italy and Spain advanced to the final despite missing key players; The absence of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner has denied fans a seventh meeting between the world’s leading men’s players in 2025.
However, in the absence of Italian number two Lorenzo Musetti, Cobolli and Berrettini managed to attract attention with three wins in three singles matches this week.
The crowd chanted the name of Cobolli, who kept his composure to deliver the comeback victory at love that forced him to breakthrough in the 11th game of a tense set.
It was no small feat, considering he admitted he had achieved a “dream” by delivering Italy to Sunday’s showdown on home soil.
Unlike Friday night’s scenes, where Cobolli ripped off his shirt to celebrate “one of the best days” of his life, the world number 22 paid the price for a slow start by conceding a one-sided opening set.
But Cobolli launched a necessary and immediate response after suffering a collapse early in the second quarter.
Cobolli’s fortunes appeared to change when a member of the audience fell ill after play had been stopped for nine minutes. When play restarted and Munar had a break point, the Italian headed over a volley that caught a lucky net cord and leveled the set again.
Although he was frustratingly denied four set points on his opponent’s serve, Cobolli took control of a must-win tiebreak to force the decider, where he scored once again.
