IIT-M develops and deploys vessel management system for ports

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras have developed and implemented a Vessel Traffic Management System for ports at Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited and are in talks with two other ports on the west coast for implementation.

Developed entirely by the National Technology Center for Ports, Waterways and Coasts (NTCPWC), the indigenous system offers the Ministry of Ports, Maritime Affairs and Waterways full and strategic control over the source code, databases and aspects of the solution. This eliminates the risk of leakage of strategically important data on the movement of ships, NTCPWC President K. Murali stated in a press release.

The system is scalable to accommodate deployment on more ports with greater capacity and reducing dependence on proprietary vendors or foreign solution providers, the statement said.
