Two tourists from UK and New Zealand killed by elephant, Zambian police say | Zambia

Police in the South African country said that two women from England and New Zealand were killed by a elephant.

Eastern Province Police Commissioner Robertson Mweemba said that 68 -year -old Easton Janet Taylor of England and 67 -year -old Alison Jean Taylor of New Zealand were attacked by an elephant with a calf.

Police said the safari guides with the group were trying to stop the charging of women by shooting elephants. The elephant was shot and injured by gunfire. The guides could not prevent the elephant attack and both women died at the scene.

It was about 600km (370 miles) from Luangwa National Park in East Zambia.

Female elephants protect their calves very much and can respond to what they perceive as a threat.

Last year, two American tourists were killed in separate matches with elephants in different parts of Zambia. In both cases, tourists were women and a safari was in a vehicle when they were attacked.
