Arsenal beat ‘best team in Europe’ so are they now Champions League contenders?

Arsenal forwards Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus were not available but Arteta was able to call on Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli from the bench.

Arsenal have had a number of forwards injured but with captain Martin Odegaard returning tonight and Gyokeres and Havertz making progress, Arteta’s options look set to improve.

Arteta, who added eight players to his squad in the summer, managed to overcome the problems he faced; Madueke scored his first goal for the club against Bayern, while Martinelli scored his fourth goal in as many Champions League matches.

Madueke said, “I couldn’t have chosen a better game to score my first goal for Arsenal. I’m very happy that the team got the win too.”

“This is an incredible statement, but we know how much effort we put in. We go into these matches with the belief that we will win.

“I’m a confident player. I don’t like when someone tells me I can’t do something. But my teammates and the coaching staff believe in me.”

Former defender Upson thinks the options Arsenal have are a big reason why Arteta has been able to keep standards so high.

“Arsenal’s bench excels in every aspect in terms of freshness and quality.” Upson said.

“We’re talking about multiple players coming in and making an impact. They’re all jockeying for a starting position.

“I think that’s the key. It’s not easy for a manager to keep a team of this depth open, to keep it together and to fight for the jersey, but also to respond in the right way when he’s not in the team.

“Ultimately, all of Mikel Arteta’s players are heading in the same direction. Our goal is to win the Premier League and go as far as they can in the Champions League.
