Plea in SC seeks 3-month extension of SIR in UP

Bharatiya Kisan Union Azad Trust has approached the Supreme Court seeking a three-month extension of the ongoing special massive revision of voter rolls in Uttar Pradesh.

The plea alleged that the four-week special intensive revision (SIR) in the state was “administratively impossible” for 15.35 crore voters and risked mass disenfranchisement.

The petition requested an extension of the implementation for three months in order to prevent erroneous deletions, protect voters in rural areas, and ensure fair and accurate records.
The Election Commission started the SIR exercise in Uttar Pradesh on November 4.

The exercise was launched under the theme ‘Shuddh Nirvachak Namavali – Majboot Loktantra’ (Clean Electoral Roll – Strong Democracy), officials said.

As part of the exercise, booth level officers or BLOs will visit each household by December 4 to verify and update voters’ details, it said.
