Vijay’s Jana Nayagan Sparks a T-shirt Boom in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: With a few days left for the release of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s swan song ‘Jana Nayagan’, garment manufacturing units in the textile hub of Tirupur in Tamil Nadu are working round the clock to meet the surge in demand for customized fan T-shirts.
After months of legal battles, an online leak, and a highly publicized dispute with the censorship board, the highly anticipated film will finally hit the big screens on July 23.
Production peaked as fans across the state placed large orders from local manufacturers for custom T-shirts featuring the actor-turned-politician’s portrait and movie branding to celebrate the big theatrical release.
“Since the film’s release was announced a few days ago, Tirupur textile units here have been working overtime to produce customized Jana Nayagan t-shirts,” said K Prabakaran, member of Tirupur Textile Unit Association.
With just four days left for the film’s release, over 700 knitwear units are working on t-shirt production. To keep up with this rush, most local manufacturers are offering courier services and cash on delivery (COD) service across Tamil Nadu.
“We haven’t seen this level of excitement in years,” said local garment factory owner K Seva Nathan.
He stated that orders were pouring in not only from Tamil Nadu but also from neighboring states such as Kerala and Karnataka.
Along with the title of the film, the t-shirts also feature iconic photographs of CM Vijay; Many orders also include slogans celebrating his political journey.
According to him, printers are working double shifts to meet deadlines before the film hits the big screens. “For the workers, many of whom are die-hard fans themselves, this is more than just a regular job – it’s a tribute to their favorite star.”
As Jananayagan prepares to take theaters by storm, Tirupur is effectively dressing the state for an event that promises an emotional and grand farewell to one of cinema’s biggest box office hits.
Jayanth, a die-hard fan of Chennai-based actor Vijay, said, “We have ordered 500 t-shirts from Tirupur textile manufacturing unit for Vijay’s fan club and we expect the delivery to be made well before the release of the film.”
“This screening is not just a film premiere but also a historic cultural event,” he added.
Sources from the Tamil Nadu Film Distributors Association said that the film may be released in around 1,000 theaters in Tamil Nadu from July 23.
The film’s certification journey was marred by significant delays, legal interventions and piracy issues.
‘Jana Nayagan’ stars an important cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj and Narain.
The film has music by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Sathyan Sooryan and editing by Pradeep E Ragav.
