Aitana Bonmati: Spain and Barcelona midfielder set for spell on sidelines with broken eg

Spanish midfielder Aitana Bonmati will be sidelined for a long time after breaking his leg in training.

The 27-year-old fell awkwardly during morning training at the national team’s training base in Las Rozas, Madrid, on Sunday.

Spain was preparing for the second leg of the UEFA Women’s Nations League final against Germany at the Estadio Metropolitano on December 2.

Bonmati played 77 minutes of the first leg in Kaiserslautern last Friday, which ended goalless.

In the statement made by the Royal Spanish Football Federation, it was stated that “following tests carried out by medical services”, Bonmati “was diagnosed with a fracture in his left fibula”.

Bonmati will return to Barcelona to begin his rehabilitation and the injury setback will be a disappointing end to what has been an excellent year for the player.

She became the first player to win the women’s Ballon d’Or three times, achieved the domestic treble with Barça and reached the Euro 2025 final with Spain.

Bonmati was also named player of the season in the Champions League by UEFA.
