‘Poorly designed’ estate set for more restrictions
Parking restrictions on a busy residential road in Lincoln look set to be extended.
Members of Lincolnshire County Council’s planning committee have called for double yellow lines on the Tiber Road leading to a large housing estate in North Hykeham to be widened.
Councilors said the road was frequently closed due to a lack of off-street parking, meaning the problems were too serious to ignore.
Reform councilor Stephen Roe, who represents the area, said: “I feel sorry for the homes that will be affected; they are suffering due to the poor design of the site and parking is not immediately accessible.”
according to Local Democracy Reporting ServiceRestrictions had been introduced to prevent the junction with Newark Road from being blocked, but councilors believed the lines should be extended.
“Traffic is backed up in both directions on this road and people are having to drive on the wrong side of the road to cross,” Roe said.
The committee heard that many homes have only one parking space at the rear, which often means extra vehicles are left on the road.
Conservative councilor Gary Taylor said: “The change will create some disruption and inconvenience, but we need to look at the wider picture.
“Lessons must be learned about the design of densely populated sites and what goes wrong there.”
Reform councilor James Bean described the site as a “poorly designed estate” [with a] minimum width road”.
Conservative councilor Charlotte Vernon said: “We sympathize with residents but it is necessary to avoid bus delays or larger vehicles getting stuck.
“There is no choice but to confirm.”
Councilor Michael Cheyne, the council’s highways manager, will be asked to approve the change and investigate whether the stays would fix the road’s problems.
