High country murderer Greg Lynn breached DV order and escaped police custody before first wife’s death | Victoria

It can now be revealed that convicted country murderer Greg Lynn once escaped police custody and was subject to intervention orders obtained by his former partner before his death in 1999.

A suppression order first granted in January 2023 expired on Wednesday following a media battle to have it overturned following the former Jetstar pilot’s conviction for the murder of 73-year-old Carol Clay at a remote Victorian campsite in March 2020.

The order had previously prohibited the media from reporting on Lynn’s criminal history; This included any interactions with police regarding Lynn’s first wife, Lisa, who was found dead outside her home in Melbourne’s north.

The coroner determined that Lisa Lynn died after consuming some drugs and alcohol, and no one was charged in her death.

Greg Lynn twice violated the intervention order, which he obtained by going to Lisa Lynn’s home in Mount Macedonia and then having a heated phone conversation with her.

She filed a police report and Lynn was asked to return the personal organizer she had taken from the family’s home. Officers took him to where he said he was, but instead of handing him over to the police, he continued walking towards the train station.

Lynn was later charged with two counts of breaching an intervention order and evading police.

He pleaded guilty in the magistrates’ court in May 1999 and was granted bail for good behavior without conviction.

At a pre-trial hearing in May 2024, prosecutors told the court they wanted Lisa Lynn to testify about her parents’ relationship before her death.

The mother testified that she traveled from Tasmania to Victoria to visit her daughter, who was trying to leave Lynn.

“In my opinion, Greg is responsible for the death of my daughter due to the mental torture he inflicted on her; she lived in fear of him,” she told the court.

“Lisa had documented countless examples of harassment.”

Crown prosecutor Daniel Porceddu claimed Lisa Lynn was subjected to frequent physical and mental abuse by the former pilot.

He told the court that Lynn “went into an uncontrollable fit of rage when he went out to dinner at the Macedonian”, targeting a man at the venue and then turning his anger on his wife.

Lynn’s lawyer, Dermot Dann KC, said it was all “hearsay” and argued that none of this material should have been allowed to be released to the jury.

The jury at Lynn’s trial was not told about her previous dealings with police.

He has always denied killing Clay and another camper, Russell Hill, 74, in 2020 and claimed their deaths were an accident.

A jury found him guilty of killing Clay in June 2024, but he was acquitted upon Hill’s death.

He is fighting his conviction and 32-year prison sentence in the Victorian court of appeal, with a decision yet to be made.
