Virat Kohli scripts new milestone with 84th international century, extends record for most back-to-back ODI hundreds

Virat Kohli reached his 84th international century and reaffirmed his position as one of cricket’s top run-scorers by scoring consecutive ODI hundreds for a record-breaking 11th time in his career. His latest masterclass adds yet another historical milestone to his already legendary batting journey.

Virat Kohli continued his impressive run in the 50-over format and scored his second consecutive ODI century against South Africa at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Wednesday. After scoring a match-winning century in the series opener in Ranchi, Kohli continued from where he left off, hitting a 90-ball century comprising seven fours and two sixes.

Kohli’s innings was further boosted by a superb hundred from Ruturaj Gaikwad, who notched his maiden century in this format in his eighth match. Immediately after Gaikwad was dismissed for 105, Kohli reached the milestone after India elected to bat first on a pitch conducive to scoring.

In his peak years from 2016 to 2018, back-to-back ODI centuries were a common occurrence for Kohli and this latest feat marks the 11th time he has achieved the feat in his remarkable 50-plus career in India; this is the highest figure by any player in ODI history.

Kohli has now extended his record-breaking century achievements in the previous century to move four centuries ahead of Sachin Tendulkar on the ODI century leaderboard. With 84 international hundreds, Kohli stands only behind Tendulkar’s 100 centuries and is 26 points ahead of the next active player, Joe Root, who has 58 centuries.

Kohli boasts an impressive average of around 70 in over 50 matches against South Africa; this is the highest average among the six players who have scored at least 1500 runs against them.

Raipur marks the 34th different ODI venue where Kohli has marked a century, tying him with Tendulkar for most centuries at different venues in this format.

The 37-year-old’s century came just a day after he announced his entry into the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy for Delhi, India’s premier domestic over-50 tournament.
