Co-op opens 11 new shops across UK in just one week – full list | UK | News

Supermarket chain Co-op announced that it opened a record 11 stores in one week as part of a major investment program. These are a mix of new stores and those reopening following transformative investment in Britain’s high streets.
A total of 50 stores are expected to open by the end of the month; Some of them opened in November. The clothing retailer continues to call on the Government to deliver business rates reform to secure the future of small shops and community retailing. The Co-op said long-term investment confidence across the sector now depends on the Government delivering its long-promised fair business rates reform. Giving thousands of small and independent retailers the certainty they need will allow them to plan, invest and protect local jobs, he adds.
The move is part of the retailer’s investment in more than 200 new and converted stores throughout 2024/25, with the Co-op’s confirmed 50 stores set to open this November and December in time for Christmas.
Co-operative operations director Kate McCrae said: “We are focused on creating local shops that are more than just a shop – they are a local hub that contributes to local life and appropriately meets the needs of communities.
“We are investing in stores and communities across the UK because we believe in the future of the high street, creating local jobs and supporting British farmers and suppliers.
“But sustainable growth needs to be a certainty and the Government now has an opportunity in this week’s Budget to invest in retailers and deliver the fair business rates reform needed to stabilize growth.”
Store openings include the Co-op becoming the first permanent retailer at the new Brent Cross Town development, a new park city for London where retail is a strategic component as part of a vibrant new high street and central hub serving homes, offices, education, sports and leisure facilities.
New-look stores are reopening, following the Co-op’s latest Franchise store opening in Frampton Cotterell (Bristol) and significant investment from Somerset to Inverness and the Scottish Highlands.
Co-op stores opened in Blaenavon last week; Oxenhope (near Keighley, Yorkshire) and Penkhull (Staffordshire).
The Co-op is one of the world’s largest consumer-owned cooperatives, with a history spanning over 180 years. Owned by more than 7 million members, Co-op exists to create value for its members and communities.
