Doom, gloom … and Belle Gibson? The top Google searches in Australia in 2025 | Google

We may indeed be living in the age of apocalypse in Australia in 2025, when natural disasters, death and politics will dominate Google searches.
Hurricane Alfred was the number one overall Google search term by Australians in 2024, according to the tech company’s annual list of search results published on Thursday.
He was followed by American political activist Charlie KirkAfter he was fatally shot in September, he also topped Wikipedia’s list of the year’s most read articles, with the 2025 Australian federal election in third place.
When we weren’t voting or doomscrolling, we were watching TV. Belle Gibson, Australian wellness hustler and subject of popular show Apple Cider Vinegar, made the overall top 10 list, as did serial killer Ed Gein from the Monster series. The England-India match, which paid homage to our sporting roots, also made it into the top 10.
American tennis player Madison Keys, who won the 2025 Australian Open title, became the most talked-about figure of the global public, followed by American TV host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel, who went viral after being temporarily suspended for his comments about Kirk’s murder, and tennis player Danielle Collins.
Natural disasters, federal elections, and foreign conflicts were top news events, along with high-profile criminal cases such as Erin Patterson’s mushroom case and the search for fugitive Dezi Freeman.
However, there were also some surprise appearances. Bianca Censori Grammys took eighth place among all news events after wearing a completely see-through outfit on the red carpet with husband Kanye West. Andy Bryon, CEO of Astronomer, who was caught cheating at a Coldplay concert, ranked 10th.
“Our searches this year have shown that we are responsive to the events shaping our world, both at home and abroad,” said Camilla Ibrahim, Google Australia’s search trends communications manager.
“We prepared for natural disasters, seeking not only the latest updates on ‘Hurricane Alfred’ but also important advice by asking ‘how to prepare for a hurricane,'” he said.
“We followed the election, went out to vote and searched for Peter Dutton and Sussan Ley. Beyond our borders, we followed news about Charlie Kirk and researched Pope Francis, Pope Leo and Greta Thunberg.”

Ibrahim said that although it was a year of “seismic changes and turmoil”, some trends remained constant.
Searches that continued to trend year after year included DIY car maintenance, St. Patrick’s Day and, perhaps worryingly, how to talk to women.
The Easter holidays also had a dominant year; hot buns were the most searched recipe, with Easter recipes coming in fourth (unsurprisingly, the viral Dubai chocolate recipe also made the list, but so did the bacon dessert).
When is Easter? The most searched question was followed closely by What does 6 7 mean? So who is Charlie Kirk? Why “How to grow ice cream in the garden?” Bonus points for those who understand the question. It was searched a lot.
Most sought-after games, toys and entertainment included plush doll Labubu, which was popular enough to have its own episode in South Park, as well as surprise hit KPop Demon Hunters and Oscar-winning film Anora.
If you wondered what Discog meant, you weren’t alone. This term was the most searched definition of 2025, perhaps indicating an increase in vinyl collecting.
Now let’s find out what’s in the bacon dessert.
