ADILABAD

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Thursday promised to bring Adilabad on the aviation map, saying work on the proposed airport in the district headquarters town would begin within a year.

Addressing a public meeting called “Praja Palana – Praja Vijayotsava Sabha” in Adilabad on Thursday, Airbus will land in Adilabad, once considered the most backward district where even buses barely passed, and said the air connectivity will spur economic growth and tourism in the region.

“As we approached, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu decided to cooperate for setting up an airport in Adilabad if the State government allocates land. With the cooperation of the Centre, our government will ensure that the airport work begins within a year,” he said.

Mr. Reddy received thunderous applause from the audience when he apparently referred to the State government’s initiative to acquire 700 acres of land for the development of a common user airport at Adilabad, where an old airstrip of the IAF is located. He noted that air connectivity will boost economic growth in the region and also make hassle-free travel for tourists from all over the country to eco-tourism destinations, including the tiger reserve in the forests connecting Telangana and Maharashtra.

Mr. Reddy trained his guns on the previous BRS executives, alleging that they had arbitrarily changed the location of the main dam planned under the Pranahita-Chevella project from Tummidihatti in Adilabad district to Medigadda under the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP). They (BRS executives) renamed the project initiated by the then YS Rajasekhara Reddy government in united Andhra Pradesh and built KLIP at a very high cost of ₹ 1 lakh crore. However, the project collapsed within three years of construction, resulting in massive waste of public money. He said previous BRS administrators had deprived farmers in undivided Adilabad district of water supplied for irrigation.

Mr. Reddy said the government will take up the Pranahita-Chevella project by constructing a dam at Tummidihatti to provide irrigation facilities to the entire undivided Adilabad district. Urging BJP Adilabad MP G. Nagesh and MLA Payal Shanker to prevail over the BJP-led governments at the Center and Maharashtra to ensure speedy execution of the project, he said, “We have already started the process to implement the project quickly.”

Referring to the defunct unit of the Cement Corporation of India (CCI) in Adilabad, he recalled, “We will endeavor to ensure setting up a cement plant in Adilabad to provide job opportunities to local youth. I have invited Soniyamma (Sonia Gandhi) and others to the Telangana Rising global summit on December 8 and 9. Ms Sonia Gandhi promised statehood to Telangana and she has fulfilled it,” he recalled and added: “Our Our Indiramma Rajyam (Congress government) is committed to all-round development of the State to achieve the objectives for which Telangana came into existence in 2014.”
