China’s Top Secret Submarine Ship Hybrid: The first clear images of the strange trimaran reveal it is a submarine as well as a surface ship, raising questions about China’s maritime ambitions.

China has revealed the first widely circulated image of its mysterious trimaran, but the ship’s purpose remains a mystery. The photo that started circulating on social media shows the profile view of the boat in the water. Although the date of the image is unclear, analysts believe it was taken at the Huangpu shipyard in Guangzhou province, where satellite images have been tracking the ship in recent months.

Marine expert HI Sutton first drew attention to the trimaran, which was still hidden under tarpaulins in satellite images. The Trimaran’s black-painted hull blends features of both submarines and surface ships, confirming earlier suspicions about its hybrid design.

While the 210-meter-long ship may not immediately appear to prioritize speed or high performance, its submarine-like characteristics are evident.

Observers detect a rear thruster that may indicate a pump-jet system. They explain that pump jets enable higher speeds with less noise, making long-distance operations quieter. The ship’s sail, which likely houses a snorkel or antenna mast, further emphasizes its submersion capabilities.

It is not known whether the ship was crewed or completely dismantled. If uncrewed, it could function as a hybrid between an uncrewed surface ship (USV) and an uncrewed underwater vehicle (UUV), effectively semi-submersible, observers said.

Depth markings along the sail and hull indicate that the ship can operate completely or almost completely submerged, allowing it to travel stealthily beneath the waves while maintaining surface efficiency.

There are various speculations about the ship’s purpose. One theory is that the ship could serve as an arsenal ship, providing China with an unscrewed, hard-to-detect platform that could launch land attack or anti-ship missiles before disappearing underwater. Such a ship could support conventional surface combatants by expanding available missile storage space, but no evidence of vertical launch systems (VLS) on deck has been observed so far.

Another possibility, analysts said, is that the ship could serve as a “mother ship” for drones. Its interior space could potentially accommodate aerial drones, vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) models, in a concept reminiscent of Ukraine’s use of small drone platforms in the conflict with Russia.

While a conventional flight deck is not visible, a rail or catapult launch system could allow for the deployment of long-range attack drones like the Shahed.

A third scenario is that the trimaran is designed for special forces operations. A semi- or fully submersible ship would allow soldiers to move discreetly in coastal areas or navigate between islands and reefs. The US Navy uses similar low-profile ships such as the Sealion or Combatant Craft Heavy (CCH) for special operations.

The ship could simply be a testing ground for emerging technologies. China has a history of developing bespoke naval vessels for research, experimental and training purposes, and this trimaran could represent the next phase of PLAN experiments with submersible or semi-submersible platforms.

Despite the enlarging images, many details remain unclear, including whether the ship carries a crew and the features of the systems on board. As additional images emerge, analysts will soon be able to piece together the capabilities and intentions behind this remarkable hybrid, offering a rare glimpse into the future of China’s naval strategy.
