Struggling Bay Area university receives $50 million donation from MacKenzie Scott

Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donates $50 million to Cal State East Bay; this was a record-breaking donation for a university struggling with severe enrollment declines.

President Cathy Sandeen said in a LinkedIn post that this was the largest gift the university has received in its 68-year history. He said the donation ensures that the university’s mission “continues now and into the future.”

“I am deeply grateful for the recognition of our commitment to student success and the trust we have in our leadership and our Pioneer community,” Sandeen said in a statement. he said. “This is an extraordinary act of confidence in our mission, our impact, and our values.”

Enrollment at the 23-campus system, the nation’s largest public university, fell by 27,881 students, or 6.5%, from 2019 to 2023, according to a Chronicle analysis, suggesting CSU has yet to recover from the effects of the pandemic.

Cal State East Bay in Hayward lost 3,090 students, or a quarter of its enrollment; that’s the third-largest loss percentage in the state.
