Google hit with EU antitrust probe over use of online content for AI

Google It was hit with an EU antitrust investigation on Tuesday into the use of online content for artificial intelligence purposes, the latest in a series of pressures from the bloc to regulate major US tech companies.

The European Commission said it was investigating whether Google violated EU competition rules by using content from web publishers and content uploaded to online video-sharing platform YouTube for AI purposes.

“Artificial intelligence is bringing remarkable innovation and many benefits to people and businesses across Europe, but this progress cannot come at the expense of the principles at the heart of our societies,” said Teresa Ribera, the bloc’s competition commissioner.

“We are therefore investigating whether Google has imposed unfair terms and conditions on publishers and creators, while disadvantaging rival AI model developers in breach of EU competition rules.”

Google has been approached for comment.
