The tragic shooting at Kentucky State University on Tuesday afternoon left one person dead, another in critical condition, disrupted final exams, and immediately placed the campus on lockdown. Frankfort Deputy Police Chief Scott Tracy told CNN affiliate WDRB that the shooting took place around 3:35 p.m. in Young Hall, one of the residence halls on campus.

While police teams continued to work at the scene, law enforcement officers also took security measures in a short time. The university, a historically black institution founded in 1886 and home to more than 2,200 students and 450 faculty and staff, remained locked down as police worked to provide security. A university official told WKYT that several people were injured, although their health conditions have not yet been confirmed, according to the report.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear responded to the news on Channel X by saying, “Let’s pray for those affected.”

Police confirmed one victim died at the scene, while another remains in critical condition. Frankfurt Police reported that a suspect is already in custody, CNN reported.

Tuesday’s shooting follows two separate incidents at other historically black universities in October. Five people were injured near Howard University on graduation weekend, while at least one person was killed and six injured just a day later at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.
