Majority of Americans blame Trump administration for high prices, poll finds

Welcome to live US politics. I’m Shrai Popat and I’ll be bringing you the latest news from Washington and beyond.

We start with today New survey from Politico This illustrates two particularly important statistics. Nearly half of Americans find it difficult to cover their monthly bills (from groceries to healthcare to utilities). During 55 percent of Americans blame the Trump administration for high prices at the grocery store.

This data comes after Donald Trump held the first rally-style event of a tour since returning to office to tout his self-proclaimed success in lowering the cost of living.

In a meandering 90-minute speech in Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania, the president called affordability a “hoax” (a stance he has repeated in recent weeks) and criticized Democrats and his predecessor, Joe Biden, for high prices. “We’re tearing them down,” he insisted Tuesday evening.

Trump also claimed that he had “crush” inflation and that “inflation has been stopped.” While inflation fell from 3% annually in January to 2.9% in August, it remained above the Fed’s 2% target.

Politico’s survey also included more telling numbers about specific situations in which Americans have had to give up vital services. 27 percent of survey respondents said they had skipped an exam in the last two years due to cost, and 23 percent said they had skipped a prescription dose for the same reason.
