The pretty little UK town full of independent shops transformed by £184k boost | UK | News

Locals in a port town in East Sussex have been faced with the regeneration of their high streets. Like many towns in the UK, Newhaven has experienced a decline in recent years; many stores were closed and others looked decrepit.

But that’s changing, thanks to funding provided through the Newhaven Enterprise Zone’s (NEZ) Downtown Revitalization Fund. The program has received 15 applications to date; four businesses have already completed renovations and more will be delivered by June 2026. Last year, the NEZ allocated £87,000 to the project and has now allocated a further £100,000.

The port city, famous for its natural harbour, aims to transform and gain a reputation as a vibrant center for creative individuals.

Michelle Connors, program manager at Newhaven Enterprise Zone (NEZ), said: “The response from town center businesses has been fantastic and shows how places like Newhaven can change the narrative around the UK’s struggling high streets.

“Ours is a town full of manufacturing and creative businesses and they were clear that they wanted a high street that reflected their ambitions, somewhere they could entertain on their lunch breaks or bring in customers.

“As Newhaven continues to become home to new cafes and bars, improving the high street will help create a more welcoming environment and contribute to the further growth of the local economy.”

Businesses that have already completed their renovations include South Coast Residential, Barwells Solicitors, Christopher Sarson Funeral Director and Newhaven Cards.

Upcoming projects include Dee’s News and Photos, Naomi’s Hair Salon, Bursa Kebabs, Haven Home Loans, Heaven Nails and Newhaven Barbers.

Other businesses planning improvements include The Viceroy, Aforedable Golf, Bodyhaven, the Old Bakery, Newhaven Pet Foods and Lewes Tap with Pat’s Pizza.

Jeremy Taylor, managing director of The Company Connector, which is developing the plan for the NEZ, said: “We have built real momentum and it is very rewarding to see the progress being made.

“We have also seen some businesses invest in their storefronts without a grant after noticing that their neighboring businesses are looking smarter and work is continuing on the new Wellness Center in the city centre.”
