In the official statement made by the university, it was stated that at least two people died and eight people were injured in the shooting attack that took place at Brown University’s Barus & Holley Engineering Building on Saturday (local time). The university, located in Providence, Rhode Island, confirmed the deaths and said eight more victims were hospitalized and were in critical but stable condition.
In the warning, authorities issued a shelter-in-place order as law enforcement officers continued to search the area. “We are providing an update on the active shooting situation. We are deeply sorry to share that we have confirmed reports of two deceased victims in the active shooting situation at the Barus & Holley engineering building. There are eight additional victims hospitalized in critical but stable condition. A shelter-in-place order is in place. The shooter or shooters are still not in custody at this time. Law enforcement is active in the area.” The university acknowledged widespread fear and uncertainty following the incident, adding that police were trying to identify the deceased victims while hospital staff were trying to identify those transported for medical treatment.
Brown University urged students, staff and residents to continue to follow law enforcement guidance and avoid the area. “The safety of our community comes first,” the warning said. Authorities also asked any students or members of the Brown community who were in the Barus & Holley Engineering Building at the time of the attack and have since left the area to contact police. According to CNN’s report based on Providence Mayor Brett Smiley, authorities said that no suspects have been detained while investigations into the shooting at the university continue. Brown University officials said the City of Providence and the FBI are closely coordinating efforts to find the shooter or attackers.
Providence Deputy Police Chief Tim O’Hara said at a press conference that the suspected attacker was a male dressed in black and urged the public to stay away from the area, saying, “We are using every available resource to find this suspect,” according to CNN. He also added that police are still determining how the suspect entered the Brown University building, but confirmed he exited from the Hope Street side. Meanwhile, according to CNN, citing law enforcement sources, police officers were involved in a confrontation with a person a few blocks away from the university that led to a shooting, but it remains unclear whether this incident is connected to the shooting at Brown University. The facility, built in 1965, has 117 laboratories, 150 offices, 15 classrooms and 29 laboratories. Brown University is a private Ivy League research institution and among the oldest centers of higher education in the United States, according to the university’s website. There have been more than 70 school shootings in the United States this year, according to CNN’s analysis of data from the Gun Violence Archive, Education Week and Every City for Gun Safety.
