Australian police have made an important update following the deadly shooting attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney, targeting people celebrating the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah. Officers said they found explosives in a car near the beach and examined several suspicious items seized near the attack. Police reportedly said in a statement that they found an improvised explosive device (IED) in a car linked to the attackers. He added that many suspicious items found in the area were examined by expert teams and a restricted zone was established. Police said one of the suspects was Naveed Akram, ABC News reported. Officers also raided his home in the Sydney suburb of Bonnyrigg following the Bondi Beach shooting.

Police also announced that one of the attackers was shot dead and the other was seriously injured. It is not yet known whether Ekrem is the deceased or the injured person. It was reported that the police also suspected that a third person with a gun was involved in the incident, but could not confirm this information because the investigation was ongoing. A senior Australian police official said no stone would be left unturned in the investigation of the attack, which was declared a terrorist incident and drew condemnation from leaders around the world.

What happened at Bondi Beach?

Twelve people were confirmed dead in Sunday’s incident, including a suspected shooter. Dozens of people, including police officers, were injured and treated. Eyewitnesses said the gunmen fired approximately 50 shots during the attack. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the scenes at Bondi Beach were “shocking and distressing”. He added: “Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives.” The Australian Jewish Association condemned the attack and criticized the Albanian government for failing to protect the Jewish community.
