Karnataka Assembly Pays Tribute to Shamanur Shivashankarappa

Belagavi: While the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Friday paid tribute to senior legislator Shamanur Shivashankarappa, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recalled his important role in shaping the social, economic and educational development of Davanagere.

Speaking about the condolence resolution offered following Shivashankarappa’s death, Siddaramaiah described him as a true public leader who was deeply rooted in public life. He recalled visiting the senior leader in hospital about 15 days ago when his health had deteriorated significantly.

The Chief Minister expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and thousands of admirers of Shivashankarappa, praying for strength to bear the loss and eternal rest of the departed soul.

Highlighting his contributions, Siddaramaiah said Shivashankarappa helped Davanagere chart a new economic path by creating a distinct brand identity for the region when the textile industry started to decline. He also praised its humanitarian efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic, stating that it has spent more than 6 million rupees on oxygen supplies to save lives.

Through the Bapuji Education Centre, Shivashankarappa transformed Davanagere into a major educational centre, establishing several institutions, including engineering and medical colleges. The Prime Minister said that as an industrialist and institution founder, he left a lasting impact in many sectors.

Shivashankarappa served as treasurer of the All India Congress Committee for a long time and was known for maintaining cordial relations across party lines, earning him a reputation as a leader. ajathashatru—someone who has no enemies.

Siddaramaiah also reminded that Shivashankarappa served as a minister during his first term as Chief Minister. During the 2016 Cabinet reshuffle, he had requested that his son SS Mallikarjun be appointed as a minister. Mallikarjun is currently serving in the current Cabinet.

Describing his long public life, Siddaramaiah said Shivashankarappa started his political career as a municipal councilor in Davanagere in 1969 and later became the chairman of the municipal council. He entered the Legislative Assembly at the age of 63 and served six terms as an MLA, as well as a Member of Parliament and president of the All India Veerashaiva Mahasabha.

On a personal note, the Prime Minister recalled that during his visits to Davanagere, he stayed at Shivashankarappa’s guest house and shared meals at his home on his insistence. He also fondly remembered celebrating his 75th birthday in Davanagere.
