Addis Ababa Rolls Out Red Carpet For PM Modi: Ethiopia Confers Highest Civilian Honour, Seals Strategic Alliance As India’s Global Ascent Takes Centre Stage | World News

Addis Ababa: Opening a new page in India-Africa relations, Ethiopia was conferred with the highest civilian honour. Ethiopia’s Great Honor NishanAbout Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the state visit on Tuesday, December 16.

With this recognition, Prime Minister Modi became the first global head of state or head of government to receive Ethiopia’s highest award. This added a new one to his international work. The honor also marked the 28th foreign state award given to an Indian prime minister and underlined the growing global recognition of India’s leadership.

The award was presented by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the African country. Expressing his gratitude, Prime Minister Modi described this moment as extremely meaningful and dedicated this honor to the people of India.

“I have just been awarded the Grand Order of Honor of Ethiopia, the country’s highest award. It is a matter of great pride for me to be honored by a very ancient and prosperous civilization of the world. I humbly accept this honor on behalf of all Indians. This award belongs to the many Indians who have shaped our partnership,” the Prime Minister said.

He also appreciated the warmth and personal gesture shown by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, recalling their recent meeting at the G20 Summit in South Africa.

“On this occasion, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my friend, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali. When we met at the G20 Summit in South Africa last month, you invited me to Ethiopia with great love and right. How could I refuse this invitation of my friend, my brother? I decided to come to Ethiopia at the first opportunity.”

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the special role played by educators in strengthening India-Ethiopia ties and spoke with pride about the shared belief that education is the foundation of national progress.

“If this visit had been in accordance with the normal diplomatic process, it might have taken a long time. But your love and compassion brought me here in a short time of 24 days,” he said.

“In India, we have always believed that Knowledge Makes Liberating. Education is the cornerstone of every country. I am proud that the most significant contribution in Ethiopia and India relations comes from our teachers. The great culture of Ethiopia attracted them here and they had the chance to raise several generations here. Even today, many Indian faculty members are working in Ethiopian universities and institutions of higher learning,” the Prime Minister said.

Referring to the road ahead, he said that the future belongs to partnerships based on trust and common vision. “Together with Ethiopia, we are committed to advancing such partnerships that can address evolving global challenges and create new opportunities,” he said.

Later, in a post on X, Modi reiterated his thoughts: “I am honored to be conferred the title ofGrand Order of Honor of Ethiopia‘. I dedicate this to the 140 crore people of India.

India and Ethiopia Increase Ties on Strategic Partnership

The visit had a strong diplomatic content beyond ceremonial moments. India and Ethiopia have officially upgraded their bilateral relations to strategic partnership; Modi said this decision will add “new energy, new speed and new depth” to relations between the two countries.

In his meeting with Prime Minister Ali, he said, “Today, we are elevating India and Ethiopia relations to a strategic partnership. This step will bring new energy, new speed and new depth to our relations.”

Emphasizing the continuity of civilization between the two countries, Modi said, “India and Ethiopia have had contact, communication and exchange for thousands of years. Our two countries, rich in language and tradition, are the symbol of unity in diversity. Both countries are democratic forces committed to peace and the welfare of humanity. We are common passengers and partners of the Global South.”

He also recalled India’s role in strengthening Africa’s voice on the global stage during its G20 Presidency. “We stood shoulder to shoulder on international platforms. The African Union Headquarters in Ethiopia makes Ethiopia the meeting point of African diplomacy. Inspired by the common vision of an inclusive world, India enabled the African Union to become a G20 member in 2023.”

Prime Minister Ali welcomed the upsurge in relations and spoke about Ethiopia’s economic momentum and India’s contribution. “Last year we grew by 9.2 per cent and this year we expect 10.3 per cent GDP growth. Along with GDP growth, our FDI inflow is also increasing substantially. India is the leading source of FDI. We have more than 615 Indian companies investing in Ethiopia. This provides a strong foundation of trust in our cooperation. I think today’s decision to upgrade our historical relationship to a strategic one is the right one,” he said.

The two sides also exchanged MoUs strengthening cooperation between multiple sectors.

Security and counter-terrorism issues came to the fore in the delegation-level talks. Modi thanked Ethiopia for its solidarity following the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack.

“We express gratitude to you for your sympathies over Pahalgam terrorist attack and for your support in our fight against terrorism,” he said, adding, “The support of friendly nations in our fight against terrorism means a lot.”

In the attack in April, 26 tourists, including 25 Indian citizens and one Nepalese citizen, lost their lives. Following this, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror camps run by Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Warm Welcome, Security Cooperation and India’s Global Diplomacy

Prime Minister Modi’s arrival in Addis Ababa reflected the warmth of bilateral relations. Prime Minister Ali personally met him at the airport and took him to the hotel, taking him to the Science Museum and Friendship Park along the way, a move not included in the official itinerary. In a post published on X after landing, the prime minister said: “I recently landed in Addis Ababa. I was honored by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali’s gesture to welcome me at the airport. Ethiopia is a nation with a great history and vibrant culture. India and Ethiopia share deep civilizational ties. I look forward to engaging with the Ethiopian leadership to further strengthen our partnership in various fields.”

Modi will address the Joint Session of the Ethiopian Parliament, highlighting the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Ethiopia since 2011. The visit is the second leg of the tri-nation tour, following Jordan and ahead of Oman, and comes at a time when India is preparing to assume the BRICS chairmanship on January 1, 2026.

Ethiopia, which became a full BRICS member in January 2024, is expected to play a key role in guiding discussions on global governance, UN reforms and the future direction of the group.

As Addis Ababa adorned itself with welcome banners and Indian flags, the visit sent a message of renewed momentum, trust and common purpose between two ancient civilizations moving forward together as partners in the Global South.
