Former Vice President Kamala Harris said the Democratic Party is “stuck in the past” and argued that party officials are not speaking “truth” in an interview with former Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison on Wednesday.
Harrison, host “At Our Table” podcastHe asked Harris if she felt the Democratic Party was too risk-averse in its messaging and policy.
“Yes, I think in some ways we are stuck in the past,” Harris said. “And so we’re not talking in a way that sounds authentic or relatable or just relevant. You know, we need to talk about the moment.”
“It’s also about risk aversion. I would say part of my thinking on this as a general matter is that we need to be able to recognize that there are voices in the room that maybe are new but have something important to say,” he continued.

Harris added that new voices should not be discounted because “that’s not the way we talk.”
“I think there’s a lot we need to do. It’s about acknowledging that we’ve made a lot of false commitment to listening to people – but are we really listening?” the former Democratic presidential candidate continued.
Harrison said party members need to accept people who don’t agree on everything.
“I also think these purity tests that we see within our party are very harmful. You know, if we say we’re a big tent party, then that means you can’t dismiss everyone just because of something they don’t agree with you on,” he said.
“I mean, if I find common ground with you on 75 or 85% of everything, then let’s work on the 75 or 80% and then we can fight like hell on the other 20%, but that’s just, we’re not one-dimensional, we’re three-dimensional people,” he continued.
