High winds reignite two-week-old brush pile fire in Cowley County

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — An old brush pile fire reignited in Cowley County on Thursday, adding to an already busy day for firefighters.

High winds crossed Kansas, creating dust storms in the northwest and sparking large grass fires in many counties, including Cowley.

A pump truck crew from Cowley County Fire District #3 was responding to one of the fires on Route 152 near Winfield when firefighters detected smoke near New Salem.

The forest fire, which was brought under control by burning approximately 500 acres near Hutchinson; evictions lifted

The crew decided to investigate and discovered that a pile of brushwood that had last burned two weeks before had reignited.

A second pumping unit also responded. Firefighters extinguished the fire by scattering the pile and pouring water on it.
