Who is Anjum Saeed? Former Olympian and Pakistan hockey team manager offloaded in Brazil after smoking incident

Former Olympian and Pakistan hockey team manager Anjum Saeed has been suspended following a smoking incident on a flight in Brazil. The episode sparked controversy around team conduct, aviation rules and Pakistan hockey’s off-field challenges during an overseas mission.
Anjum Saeed, the manager of the Pakistan national hockey team and a former Olympian, became the center of a huge controversy after she was taken off an international flight for smoking on board. The incident occurred while the aircraft was stationary for refueling at Rio de Janeiro airport, at a time when aviation security protocols are at their most stringent.
Saeed was traveling with the senior Pakistan team on its return journey from Argentina, where the team was competing in the FIH Pro League. Reports indicate that Saeed was caught smoking inside the plane during a transit stop in Brazil.
International aviation regulations categorically prohibit smoking on board aircraft, especially during refueling operations, due to the serious risk of fire or explosion. According to sources at the airline, the situation escalated further when Saeed and an unidentified actor got into a heated argument after allegedly arguing with airline staff. As a result, both men were banned from re-boarding the flight to Dubai while the rest of the team continued their journey.
Career and Legacy
Before this controversy, Anjum Saeed was known for her illustrious career as a defender and midfielder of the Pakistan national team. Career achievements include:
1990 Asian Games: Member of the gold medal-winning team that defeated India in the final.
1992 Barcelona Olympics: Helped Pakistan win the bronze medal.
1994 World Cup: A key member of the team that lifted the trophy in Sydney.
1994 Champions Cup: Part of the team that won the championship.
The aim of his appointment as manager was to provide senior leadership to a team making its debut in the elite FIH Pro League.
contradictory claims
Saeed, who returned separately to Pakistan later in the week, categorically denied the allegations. He claimed that his absence from the team flight was due to “personal work in Dubai” and suggested that rivals unhappy with his appointment were spreading fake news.
However, the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) expressed doubts about this statement. A senior official said the board had already collected preliminary information confirming the dumping incident and security breach.
Official response
PSB described the incident as a “serious matter” that reflected negatively on the reputation of Pakistani sports. They formally requested the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) to launch an independent investigation into the conduct of the manager and the player concerned.
The controversy marks a dismal conclusion to a difficult tour for the Pakistan team, which has struggled on the field and lost all four matches against the Netherlands and Argentina in the Pro League.
