NYC Mayor-elect Mamdani celebrates Hanukkah with Mandy Patinkin

Zohran Mamdani, who was elected as the Mayor of New York, released a video in which he celebrated Hanukkah with Jewish actor Mandy Patinkin and his family, at a time when there were antisemitism scandals among his employees.

Video published at Mamdani’s X account On Saturday, the mayor-elect was seen with Patinkin, his wife and son as they celebrated the first night of Hanukkah. During the video, Mamdani helped Patinkin prepare dinner using a Jewish cookbook and Patinkin’s family recipes.

After the meal was prepared, Mamdani joined Patinkin in the Hanukkah prayer, and the actor invited her to light the menorah.

“I wanted to make Shehecheyanu because it’s about new beginnings,” Patinkin said in the video. “And this is a new beginning that we as a family are incredibly grateful for, the city is grateful for, the world is grateful for.”

“Your term as mayor, or whatever you call it, is now blessed,” Patinkin added before the group sat down to eat.

At the dinner, Patinkin talked about what he admired about Mamdani as a politician.

“I immediately felt that you were not just a politician, but a much more important person to me,” Patinkin said. “And your care for equity and equality for all people. And we will teach other cities, then nations, and then we hope the whole world will follow your way.”

Patinkin and his wife had previously expressed their support for Mamdani in a promotional campaign during the New York City mayoral election. Video for him on Instagram In October.

“We’re going to win this because we have this extraordinary person who is going to lead our city and eventually, if we really think about it, our nation and the world into a better, safer, all-inclusive existence. And that’s what I love about this man,” Patinkin said.

The Hanukkah video comes just days after Mamdani’s newly appointed director of assignments, Catherine Almonte Da Costa, abruptly resigned after social media posts resurfaced showing her making anti-Semitic remarks. This position would put him in charge of hiring at City Hall.

During the campaign, Mamdani was pressured to drop his support for the phrase “globalizing the intifada”, but he repeatedly refused to condemn it before saying he would discourage the phrase.
