Russian general killed by car bomb in Moscow, investigators say | Russia

A Russian general was killed after an explosive device detonated under his car south of Moscow on Monday morning, investigators said.

Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the operational training directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, died from his injuries, Svetlana Petrenko, the official spokeswoman of the Russian Investigative Committee, said.

“Investigators are continuing multiple investigations into the murder. One of them is that the crime was planned by Ukrainian intelligence services,” Petrenko said.

Russian news sources reported that a car exploded in a parking lot on Moscow’s Yaseneva Street around 7 a.m. with its driver inside.

Ukraine’s security service claimed responsibility for a similar attack on a senior Russian soldier in December 2024.

Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, chief of the army’s nuclear, biological and chemical protection forces, was killed when a bomb hidden in an electric scooter exploded outside his apartment building, a day after Kiev filed criminal charges against him. His assistant Ilya Polikarpov was also killed.
