The Bengaluru city police on Monday (December 22, 2025) announced that it has partnered with ride-hailing platforms such as Uber and Ola for a technology integration aimed at improving safety for both drivers and riders by strengthening emergency response mechanisms in the city.
The integration allows drivers and riders to share real-time location data and important journey-related information directly with police through ride-hailing apps in emergency situations.
According to Seemant Kumar Singh, Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru City, “The new integration allows emergency call facilities to be directly accessed from the Uber and Ola mobile apps used to book rides. With this feature, passengers and drivers seeking emergency assistance can share real-time location data, trip details and contact details with the 112 emergency response infrastructure of the Bengaluru City Police from within the app.”
“The uninterrupted flow of critical information will provide quicker access to police in emergencies, facilitate faster response times and facilitate potentially life-saving interventions by first responders. The initiative is seen as a significant step towards leveraging technology partnerships to enable safer urban mobility and better public safety in Bengaluru,” Mr. Singh said.
Meanwhile, according to Uber, users can transmit critical details to the police control room with a simple swipe, allowing first responders to reach the scene faster and respond more effectively.
“During an ongoing ride, passengers or drivers can access the safety toolset by tapping the blue shield icon in the Uber app. When they select ‘112’ emergency assistance, they are notified that their live location and contact information will be automatically shared with the police when they swipe to call,” an Uber spokesperson said.
“Once enabled, the system shares live location updates every four seconds along with the user’s name, contact number, driver and vehicle details and email address if available,” the spokesperson added.
Uber explained that sharing ride and contact information with the police is enabled by default to ensure timely response. However, users still retain control over their data and can opt out of sharing their location with the police; In this case, the SOS signal will not be transmitted to the control room, but they will still be able to call 112 via their phone.
Earlier, on November 10, Mr. Singh while speaking at #THTalksBengaluru, Hindu‘s interactive program revealed that the city police is directing taxi and autorickshaw aggregator apps to integrate SOS button feeds with the city police’s command center for instant response. In the same month, the city police also mandated the display of stickers bearing the police helpline number 112 and a QR code directing users to the mobile app of the Karnataka State Police (KSP).
