Florida dad arrested for stealing 400 pounds of avocados to buy kids Christmas gifts, police say
A South Florida man was arrested after stealing 400 pounds of avocados to buy and sell Christmas gifts for his children, according to police.
Edel Perez, 29, is accused of stealing nearly 400 pounds of avocados from a southwest Miami-Dade grove Monday morning, according to authorities.
The incident occurred when deputies noticed a black Mercedes parked near the avocado orchard on Southwest 217th Street and 320th Street. They saw Perez, wearing a black hoodie, pick the avocados and load them into the car.
After searching the vehicle, authorities found bags full of avocados and the trunk was completely full of fruit. Deputies estimated the total value of the stolen avocados to be around $800.
Perez told officers he stole the avocados to sell and buy Christmas gifts for his children.
Investigators stated that Perez entered the grove by cutting the fence line, thereby trespassing on agricultural land. He currently faces charges of trespassing and third-degree grand larceny, and his bail has been set at $5,000.
